grass finished beef from our Family to Yours!

WHAT IS GRASS-FINISHED BEEF?

The term “grass finished beef” refers to beef that comes from a cow which ate grass for the entirety of its diet during its lifetime. Grassfinished beef can also include other plants which cows naturally eat as they roam freely in the fields. Most cows raised in many parts of the world such as the US subside solely on grains.

Grain fed cows are often fed grains in order to ensure that the cows gain weight rapidly, so that they may be slaughtered. Grass finished beef offers a myriad of benefits in comparison to grain fed beef, from environmental benefits to health benefits. At Yandina Butchery, we ensure that our customers can enjoy 100% grass finished, chemical free beef which comes from happy, free-ranged cows. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer a high quality grass finished product which can be delivered to your door, or collected from our butcher shop on the Sunshine Coast.

BENEFITS OF GRASS FINISHED BEEF

Better For Your Health

Beef which is produced from grass-finished cows is healthier and more nutrient-rich for us to eat than beef produced from grain-fed cattle.

Grass Is Healthier For Animals

Several scientific studies show that animals which are fed on grass are happier, less stressed, live longer lives and are more fertile than those farmed intensively.

Good For The Environment

Grass finished farms often have a positive carbon footprint, by regenerating the soil rather than depleting it, and supporting more wildlife.

Supports Local Farmers

Grass finished cattle helps support local farmers as grass is an often under utilised crop and there is a lot of potential to produce more food from our grassland, reducing the need to import feeds.

“You are what you eat” is more prevalent than ever today, given that we now understand the health impacts of specific foods. This rule is also applicable to cows as what a cow eats can significantly affect the nutrient composition of its beef and this is particularly apparent when it comes to fatty acid composition.

The way cows are fed can have a major effect on the nutrient composition of their beef. In modern times, with the growth of commercial farming – cattle are often fed grains. However, the animals which people ate throughout evolution roamed free and ate grass. Many studies have shown that the nutrients in beef can vary depending on what cows eat. This has led to society questioning whether the way cows are fed makes any difference to your health.

Studies have shown grass finished beef usually contains less total fat than grain-fed beef, which means that gram for gram, grass finished beef contains fewer calories. However, the composition of fatty acids is also different between the two types of cattle. It has been proven that grass finished beef contains up to five times as much omega-3 as grain fed beef. Omega-3 is an essential vitamin which has been shown to improve brain function and overall health. More so, grass finished beef contains about twice as much CLA(conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) as grain-fed beef. This fatty acid is associated with a myriad of health benefits, including improved metabolic rates and weight loss.

These fatty acids are essential for human growth and development and are often thought to only be derived from fruits, vegetables and fish. However these fatty acids also occur in abundance in grass finished beef. The beef is a rich source of this healthy fat because the cows spend their lives eating plants that are naturally rich in omega-3s themselves. By eating this natural diet, the cows are able to absorb nutritious fats. As a result of this, grass finished beef has nearly 60% more omega-3s than beef from cattle that have been raised on a low-omega-3 grain diet.

There are a wide range of benefits associated with omega-3s, these include: a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Omega-3s also helps reduce symptoms of hypertension, depression, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), joint pain and other rheumatoid problems, as well as certain skin ailments. Research from various studies has shown that omega-3s can also boost the immune system and help protect us from an array of illnesses.
